Q & A: Daniel Kinyanjui, Analyst, Supply Chain –  inSupply Health

What inspired your decision to join inSupply Health six years ago, and how does that drive still motivate you today?

Coming from the retail industry, I wanted to make a bigger impact on customer service. Supply chain management, which handles everything from the source to the consumer, seemed like the perfect fit. I started at inSupply Health as an intern and was thrilled about the opportunity to work in public health. What keeps me motivated is seeing the difference we make for our clients. I love improving service delivery in the health sector. My background is in education, but I took a master class in supply chain management, which has given me valuable knowledge and hands-on experience that I use every day at inSupply Health.

Can you describe a specific project or initiative you were part of, and how it impacted your personal and professional development?

One of the biggest solutions  I’ve been involved with at inSupply Health is the IMPACTT approach, which is designed to strengthen supply chains and health systems by focusing on three key areas: people, processes, and data. This has significantly transformed my perspective on how health systems should operate. By emphasizing the use of data to inform decisions, we’ve been able to make our processes more efficient and ensure we’re effectively serving our customers, which is our ultimate goal. Working with the IMPACTT approach has also highlighted the importance of building effective, multi-sectoral teams. These teams bring together diverse perspectives, energy, and talents to work towards a common goal. This experience has significantly influenced my personal and professional development, teaching me the value of collaboration and data-driven decision-making.

What impact does inSupply Health have? What’s inSupply Health’s role in the healthcare sector and its influence on the communities it supports?

To understand the impact of inSupply Health, it’s important to start with our vision. Our vision is for communities to set their own health priorities and co-create solutions to address their health challenges. Our mission is to transform health through the co-creation of innovative and sustainable solutions. With this in mind, inSupply Health has undertaken numerous initiatives aimed at transforming health systems. Although we are not direct healthcare providers, we bring our expertise and technical capabilities to assess and improve health systems. Our work revolves around empowering communities. For example, our IMPACTT approach focuses on strengthening supply chains and health systems by addressing people, processes, and data.

We’ve developed tools like the cStock solution, which supports community health systems with reporting and resupply. Our data use tools, such as the Indicator Tracking Tool, help inform health decisions. Additionally, we conduct supply chain assessments and implement performance management strategies to drive continuous improvement. A key aspect of our approach is engaging with communities throughout the process. We co-create and co-design solutions with them, ensuring their needs are met and they take ownership of the solutions.

How do you maintain a sense of innovation and adaptability in your role, especially as the company continues to evolve and grow?

Innovation and adaptability are integral to the supply chain profession, and they come naturally with practice. Supply chain is always evolving, and my interactions with various stakeholders—like the Ministry and sub-national coordinators—expose me to new challenges daily. Each challenge, whether it’s related to data or commodity availability, impacts the entire supply chain, requiring continuous adaptation and problem-solving. The IMPACTT  approach at inSupply Health, which emphasizes continuous improvement, also plays a crucial role. This model focuses on innovate, do, review, and evaluations of processes and projects to identify areas for improvement. By staying engaged with the latest challenges and collaborating with users and the Ministry, I ensure that our supply chains remain resilient and responsive.

Share your aspirations and goals within inSupply Health and explain how you plan to contribute to its continued success.

I think the organization has set itself up for excellence and success with regard to its vision, mission, and various goals. The culture of continuous improvement has instilled strategies in individuals, including myself, to always consider the bigger picture and the impact on the communities we serve. This relentless pursuit of excellence fuels our drive to excel. Looking at the different roles we’ve taken in health supply chain and health system transformation in the region through various projects, the opportunities are endless. This experience not only builds our capacity but also stretches us to think about what more we can do for our communities.

My passion remains in supply chain, and I aim to contribute to transforming health systems in Kenya in any capacity. I plan to continue growing in knowledge, skills, and attitude, and to collaborate with people from different organizations to have a significant impact on the supply chain domain.

Summarizing Experience: In one sentence, encapsulate your overall experience at inSupply Health, capturing its essence and impact on you.

Gratitude would summarize it best. I’m so grateful that inSupply provided a platform for me. I joined as an intern, and it gave me the opportunity to put all my supply chain knowledge into practice and helped me transition from retail supply chain to health supply chain. It has presented a lot of opportunities for me. The challenges have built my character, and the successes have ensured that I enjoy the journey.
